Highly trained Registered Nurses, Enrolled Nurses, and Home Support Workers provide this care right in the comfort of veterans’ homes.

DVA Community Nursing FAQs

DVA Community Nursing is a program funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs that provides clinical nursing care to eligible veterans in their own home. Services are delivered by qualified nurses and may include wound care, medication management, chronic disease support, and health monitoring. The goal is to help veterans maintain their health, recover from illness, and continue living independently at home.

DVA Community Nursing is generally available to eligible veterans who hold a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card or certain White Cards and require clinical care at home. Eligibility is determined by a medical practitioner who assesses the veteran’s health needs and provides a referral for community nursing support.

To access DVA Community Nursing, your GP or treating doctor will usually complete a referral to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. The referral outlines the type of clinical care required. Once approved, a community nursing provider such as Kanda can organise qualified nurses to deliver care in your home.

DVA Community Nursing services focus on clinical care delivered at home by registered or enrolled nurses. This may include wound care, medication administration, continence support, chronic disease management, post hospital care, and health assessments. Services are tailored to the veteran’s medical needs and treatment plan.

Yes. DVA Community Nursing provides clinical nursing care delivered by qualified nurses, while Veterans’ Home Care focuses on practical support such as cleaning, personal care, and home maintenance. Some veterans receive both programs if they require clinical treatment as well as help with everyday tasks.

In most cases, DVA Community Nursing services are fully funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs for eligible veterans. Because services are approved through a medical referral, there is typically no out of pocket cost. Your provider can confirm coverage and explain how the program works.

The frequency of nursing visits depends on the care plan developed by your doctor and the nursing provider. Some veterans may need short term daily visits after hospital discharge, while others may receive ongoing clinical support several times a week for chronic health conditions.

Yes. DVA Community Nursing is commonly used to support veterans recovering at home after hospital treatment or surgery. Nurses can assist with wound care, medication management, mobility support, and monitoring recovery. This helps reduce hospital readmissions and supports a safe transition back home.

Yes. Many veterans receive clinical care through DVA Community Nursing while also accessing other support services. For example, practical help may be arranged through Veterans’ Home Care or broader in-home care services provided by organisations like Kanda to support daily living and wellbeing.

If you have received a referral for DVA Community Nursing, Kanda can coordinate qualified nurses to deliver care in your home. Our team works closely with veterans, families, and healthcare professionals to ensure services are delivered safely and consistently, helping you maintain independence and quality of life at home.
