Veterans' Home Care

The Veterans’ Home Care Program offers in-home care and support services to help those supported by the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) maintain their health, quality of life, and ability to continue living safely and independently in their own home.

Practical support to help veterans stay independent

If you need a little extra help around the home or with personal care – whether on a short-term or ongoing basis – the Veterans’ Home Care Program is here to assist.

It’s important to note that the Veterans’ Home Care Program is not intended for complex or high-level care needs. If you require long-term, high-level personal care, please explore our DVA Community Nursing Program for more comprehensive support.

  • If eligible, you will receive a care plan outlining the services you’ve been approved for.
  • The VHC agency will provide us with the service details, and we’ll then contact you to arrange the commencement of your services at a time that works for you.

Veterans' Home Care FAQs

Veterans’ Home Care (VHC) is a program funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs that helps eligible veterans and war widows or widowers remain living safely and independently in their own home. The program provides practical support such as domestic assistance, personal care, respite, and home maintenance. Services are designed to improve wellbeing and reduce the risk of needing residential aged care.

Veterans’ Home Care is available to eligible veterans and war widows or widowers who hold certain Department of Veterans’ Affairs cards. Generally, this includes Gold Card holders and some White Card holders who have assessed care needs. Eligibility is determined through an assessment organised by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

To access Veterans’ Home Care, you can contact the Department of Veterans’ Affairs directly to request an assessment. A VHC assessment agency will discuss your needs and determine the type of support that may help you remain independent at home. Once approved, services can be arranged through a provider such as Kanda.

Veterans’ Home Care can include a range of practical in home support services. These often include domestic assistance such as cleaning, personal care, respite for carers, and home or garden maintenance. The exact services you receive depend on your assessment and the level of support required to help you remain safe and comfortable at home.

Veterans’ Home Care mainly focuses on practical everyday support rather than clinical services. Nursing and medical care may be available through other Department of Veterans’ Affairs health programs. If you require broader assistance at home, providers like Kanda can also discuss additional in home care services that may complement your VHC support.

Most Veterans’ Home Care services are funded by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs. In some cases, there may be a small co payment depending on the type of support provided. Your service provider will explain any costs clearly before services begin so you understand exactly what is covered.

Once your assessment is complete and services are approved, support can usually begin relatively quickly. Your provider will work with you to organise the services you need and schedule visits that fit your routine. The goal is to ensure veterans receive practical help that supports their independence at home.

Yes. Some veterans receive support through Veterans’ Home Care while also accessing other aged care services if their needs change. For example, additional support may be organised through other home care programs or privately funded services. This flexible approach helps ensure you receive the right level of care as circumstances evolve.

Yes. Family members, carers, or trusted friends can help coordinate Veterans’ Home Care services on your behalf. Many families are involved in the assessment and care planning process to ensure the support provided reflects the veteran’s preferences, daily routines, and wellbeing goals.

Veterans’ Home Care helps older veterans remain independent, safe, and connected to their community while continuing to live at home. By providing help with everyday tasks and household activities, the program reduces stress for both veterans and their families while supporting quality of life and wellbeing.

If you are eligible for Veterans’ Home Care, Kanda can work with you to deliver the services approved through your assessment. Our team focuses on practical support that helps you remain independent at home. You can contact Kanda to discuss your situation and learn how our experienced support workers can assist with your care needs.
