Simplified NDIS Update: Art & Music Therapy
Art and music therapy will continue to be supported through the NDIS when there’s evidence that the therapy is beneficial for a participant. This follows an independent review led by Dr Stephen Duckett AM, which looked closely at how these therapies are delivered and funded.
Key Points from the Review
- Qualified professionals only: Therapy must be delivered by practitioners who are registered with a recognised professional body.
- Fair pricing: From 24 November 2025, the maximum NDIS price for art and music therapy will be $156.16 per hour, the same as counselling.
- Clearer definitions: The NDIS will draw a stronger line between therapy supports and art or music as recreational activities. NDIS funds cannot cover the cost of general art or music classes, but they can fund the supports that help a person take part.
- Evidence checks: The NDIS Evidence Advisory Committee will review the research on art and music therapy in its 2025–26 work plan, with further decisions expected by early 2026.
What Participants Need to Know
- You can continue with art or music therapy if it’s already in your NDIS plan.
- Expect new pricing and rules from late 2025.
